Embalming Fundamentals: History, Methods, and Professional Practice

This course introduces students to the essential principles, historical development, and professional responsibilities involved in human embalming. Beginning with an examination of embalming practices from ancient civilizations to modern scientific methods, students will gain an understanding of how cultural beliefs, technology, and funeral customs have shaped today’s embalming standards.

The course then focuses on the fundamental procedures used in modern embalming including primary disinfection, arterial and cavity treatment, preservation techniques, restorative planning, and post-embalming care. Students will also learn basic instrumentation, sanitation protocols, and professional safety standards required in the preparation room.

Emphasis is placed on the legal and ethical considerations governing embalming practice, including authorization requirements, industry regulations, public health guidelines, cultural and religious considerations, and professional conduct.
